What Are the Requirements to Become an Advocate in the TRNC?
Age, citizenship, legal education, pupillage, the Bar examination, registration and annual licensing.

Which legal qualifications are recognised?
The Law covers specified qualifications from Türkiye or Greece, recognised law faculties in the TRNC, certain qualifications from the United Kingdom and other common-law jurisdictions, and other law degrees recognised by the Law Council through publication in the Official Gazette. Programme duration and whether study was by correspondence are legally relevant.
How does pupillage work?
Pupillage normally lasts 12 months under an advocate who is actively practising and has at least five years’ standing. Where no suitable advocate is available, placement in the Attorney-General’s Office may be possible on the statutory conditions. Registration in the Pupils’ Register is required within 30 days of starting.
The Law Council may reduce the period in the circumstances allowed by law, but not below six months. Reduction is discretionary, not automatic.
The Bar examination
At least four months of pupillage must be completed before sitting the examination. The Law provides for examinations in February, June and October, conducted in Turkish. Subjects include the Constitution, Advocates Law and Etiquette Regulations, Courts Law, civil and criminal procedure, evidence and other announced legislation.
Admission path
- 01Verify the qualification
Confirm that the degree falls within Cap. 2 or has been recognised by the Law Council.
- 02Register the pupillage
Choose an eligible placement and enter the Pupils’ Register within 30 days.
- 03Complete training and examination
Meet the applicable pupillage period and pass the Law Council examination.
- 04Complete registration and licensing
After certification, enter the Roll and obtain the annual licence for the year of practice.
A degree alone is not a licence
Graduating from law school does not itself authorise legal practice. Every admission condition, registration on the Roll and a valid annual licence must coexist.
