How Do You Apply for TRNC Citizenship?

Citizenship Law No. 25/1993 provides different routes through birth and parentage, adoption, marriage and admission by a competent authority (sections 4–9). Residence alone does not grant citizenship. Establishing an existing entitlement and applying for admission are different procedures.

Where do you apply?

Section 11 directs applicants in the TRNC to the Immigration Department or its branches and applicants abroad to external representations. The documents are passed to the responsible Ministry. Confirm the current appointment procedure with the authority.

Forms and supporting documents

Identity, lawful residence, travel history, livelihood and health documents may be relevant. The exact checklist depends on the route and should be verified on the application date.

   Assess parentage, marriage or ordinary/exceptional admission.

   Use the Ministry of Interior's current list for the chosen route.

   Compile residence permits, travel dates, family and livelihood documents.

   Apply to the Immigration Department or a branch, or abroad to an external representation.

   Monitor the decision

   Respond to further information requests and follow the competent authority's review.

Five years are not automatic citizenship

Ordinary admission requires several conditions and a competent decision; five years of lawful residence alone is insufficient. The marriage and exceptional routes have distinct provisions.
