Ordinary admission requires several conditions

Section 8(1) of Citizenship Law No. 25/1993 sets out cumulative conditions for admission by Ministry decision. Even when they are met, admission is not automatic.

How is residence calculated?

Residence must comply with immigration law (section 10). Section 8(1)(B) addresses annual absences of up to 40 days. Section 10 also addresses a total of up to six months abroad without breaking continuity, but does not count those days as residence. Permissions and entry and exit dates should be calculated together.

Marriage and investment

Marriage is subject to a separate application under section 7. A marriage certificate does not itself establish citizenship. Exceptional investment or service remains subject to a competent decision under section 9.

Before filing

  • Identify the applicable statutory route.
  • Calculate residence and days abroad.
  • Review spouse and children's status separately.
